Understanding the Purpose of the Pre-game Warm Up

Postby MTNGoalie » Sun Feb 13, 2011 3:18 am

Here is our newest article, written by MTN Goaltending Directors/Head Instructors Ian and Blair Robertson. This article is part of a quest we have been on to educate goalies and coaches about ways that they could help to better prepare goaltenders for game action.

Travis,

A great and comprehensive article.

I am still amazed as how many times I see a goalie getting worked in a warm up as if they can improve their reflexes in the last five minutes before a game, when I would rather see the goalie have the opportunity to track the puck all the way into their equipment.

I do like to finish warm ups with 2 on 1's, this pulls together all the goalie's movements into a real setting. It is a huge benefit to our defensemen, so their first backwards movements are done before the actual game.

One of the more difficult issues at the youth level is trying to fit this in a five minute warm up.

... or even a THREE-minute warm-up.

We actually spent time in practice on the pre-game warm-up, this season, just so the kids could execute it as efficiently as possible right before a game.

Nice article...
