Hiller/Varlamov glove positioning

Postby Cubanpuckstopper » Fri May 08, 2009 8:19 pm

Even though this discusses professionals, the direction of the thread is technical, Varlamov and Hiller have been big hits here during the playoffs.

It does appear that there is a tendency to hold their gloves higher and/or more fingers-up than average? And arguably higher than might be taught in North America.

With Varlamov, he does not appear to project his glove towards the puck. He keeps it too far back and misses or gives up a pop out rebound. You can see him try to watch the puck in, but loose it as it comes to his body.

If this interview is authentic

Varlamov discusses his glove (last couple of questions in interview)

I don't know if he is descrbiing his glove or his glove hand

Buenos días Cuban! ¿cómo está usted! Me alegro de estar aquí!

Oops, sorry, we're in the English thread, what country am I in today?

Thanks, I enjoyed reading the interview. Varlamov comes off well. I've had glove problems, usually when they are old and breaking down or new and don't yet close properly. I've already described what I think he did wrong on the Eaton goal.

The Finns are unusual among the Europeans in that they play a game very similar to baseball, http://www.finnpower.com/FinnishLine/Vo ... facts.html . This might explain why they tend to have such excellent catching technique.

This could lead me to a discussion of deliberate practice, but another time.

Edit:
Fixed, I moved the point off the link. Thanks korppu, my appologies beaver.

I use (or atleast try to) the same glove position as Varlamov. I found it out a while ago. Then I noticed that I can catch more "easily" than before I was using that. It's also called as the "Fingers-Up" technique. (Sorry for my bad English, but I'm only 13)
