Screen shot & rebound drill

28.3.2005

Make sure you practice screen shots often with your goalies and focus especially on the following rebounds. What do I mean by that? Well, too often the focus is on just getting a lot of shots for the goalie and he/she will never have time to really execute all the moves properly and through the whole game like situation.

Here's what I recommend:

  • Execute this drill with just a couple of players and/or other goalie helping you. With too many players involved the pace usually become too fast between repeats
  • Place players also to both sides and have them try to score on any rebounds that are given to their direction. Only game like 1-time shots
  • Take shots from normal game position with 1 active screener in front of the goalie
  • Goalie must focus on finding the puck and keeping it in his view despite the active screen
  • After making the save goalie must follow his/her rebound until puck is out of the playable area
  • If rebound is playable the goalie must make another save on the shot from player on the side waiting for the rebound! This is what one usually does not have time for at the normal practice and therefore a lot of goals are scored on rebounds as they don't get enough attention in the goaltenders training routine
