Goaltending has been developing to more active and participating style every year lately and I want to emphasize this especially to younger netminders. We will be publishing numerous articles about various aspects of stickhandling, but in this videoresource we will focus on certain narrow area - putting the puck back into the play instead of freezing it.
Many goalies have a bad habit if freezing the puck way too often. Let's take a little different angle to this issue and view it the way that every time the goalie plays the puck to his own teammate instead of freezing it, it's literally the same thing as a won faceoff. I myself teach my goalies to be "awake" at all times and look for oppoirtunitoies to pass the puck when ever possible. This also will force the opponents to more "on their toes" when the goalei gets the puck. Goalie can often help his team and clear the puck to neutral zone or all the way to the other end when his own team is killing penalties. This is always better than taking a dangerous faceoff to your end when opponents are on powerplay.
In this video you see a good example of a goalie being alert and participating actively when his team is killing penalty. By not freezing the puck and clearing it out of his own end he avoided a very dangerous faceoff situation and he also killed several seconds off the penalty. |
